Without the microscope it would have been difficult to pick a plant up with their bare hands. The guide to do that is still the same today as we learn new things about nature.There are still good books and guides to be read today. If you are interested in learning all you can about science you may need to pick up a book. All of the information we learn gets stored in our brains. Solution: (a) Addition: Addition means increasing a number by an amount equal to the other number. For example, add 3 to 2. Here 3 is added in 2. That means 2 is increased by an amount equal to 3. Thus on increasing 2 by an amount equal to 3 we get 5. Thus 2 + 3 = 5. (b) Subtraction: Subtraction means decreasing a number by an amount equal to the other number. For example, subtract 4 from 6. Solution: An equation represents the equality of two numbers or expression. On the left hand side we have two variables y and x. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Rebekah: I attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It is located in the heart of Provo which is a bigger town, but the university is what drives its economy. Getting around Provo is extremely easy for students. Students have to live within a mile radius of campus, so walking to school is always an option; however, the bus system is reliable and free for students. Many students survive without a bike or car at the school. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Rebekah: One thing I loved about attending BYU was the availability of the professors. They all have office hours and love meeting with students to help them with any questions or concerns. There are extremely large general classes with upwards of 1,000 students in them, so those professors might be more difficult to get in touch with; however, those classes have several teaching assistants who are available to help as well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Rebekah: There are two different options for on-campus housing: housing with kitchens and housing without. The school is in the middle of rebuilding the kitchen dorms (Heritage Halls), so they are brand new buildings with more room and upgraded features. The other dorms were recently rebuilt or remodeled as well. Dorm life is awesome if you are a freshman. The majority of students living in the dorms are freshman who love life, stay up late, and enjoy their new college adventure. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Rebekah: BYUs Business School is highly ranked, especially its Accounting program. It also has a well-known and respected Engineering program. Although, you really cant go wrong with the major you choose. All of the majors are well-respected, and the school as a whole is well-known and highly favored in every field. I studied Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. It was a great experience with hands-on, real-life application as well as fantastic support from all professors involved. As a general rule, each major has some sort of internship and/or capstone project which gives students a flavor of what life will be like after school. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Rebekah: Meeting people at BYU is extremely easy. As I mentioned previously, nearly all freshmen live in the dorms and dorms basically force you to meet people since you share common areas. Also, BYU is predominately attended by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which means most of the students attend church with each other. Through church and church activities, it makes meeting others even easier. Business Insider recently ranked BYU #1 for a university where students are both hot and smart, and as part of the description of the university, it stated everyone is very friendly, and it's not uncommon to strike up a conversation with a perfect stranger. BYU has a strict honor code which deters Greek life, so it definitely does not play a significant role in the social life there. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Rebekah: Students can set up an appointment with the Career Center at any time. It is well staffed and helpful for all students, even those who need guidance as to which career would best suit them. Every year, they have several career fairs bringing in companies from all over the country, including General Mills, various school districts, top accounting and consulting firms, as well as others. Basically, each college at the university has its own career fair at some point throughout the year. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Rebekah: BYU has one of the best libraries in the country. While I was at BYU, it was consistently ranked #1 in the nation. It has everything a student needs, including ample study areas, rooms, and computers. All dorms have lounges, but I imagine they can be noisy, so most students prefer to study at the library or in their bedrooms. There are also plenty of study areas in every building on campus. Students tend to find their study space they like to frequent. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Rebekah: Provo basically caters to BYU since it is the economic center of Provo. Provo is located at the base of the Wasatch mountains, so there is plenty of outdoor fun to be had: hiking, biking, camping, fishing, boating, etc. Students also often take advantage of the great variety of restaurants and shopping in the area. There is always something to do in Provo whether its attending an event on campus, a local party, or going out on the town. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Rebekah: There are close to 29,000 undergrad students who attend BYU. General classes tend to be huge, but some sections offered are on the smaller side. Regardless of the class size, the university staffs the class with adequate TA numbers and extra support so students can always reach some type of expert to help them with the subject matter. As students get into their major specific courses, class sizes greatly shrink. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Rebekah: I absolutely loved my experience at BYU and hope to send my own children there. I cant pinpoint one memorable experience because I had so many. Honestly, the majority of the professors I had were fantastic, well-spoken, and passionate about the subject matter. Christmas time is here again and everybody is busy, looking for presents for their children, friends and loved ones, decorating Christmas tree and doing all this fidgety and exciting stuff we do each year. Christmas is an amazing holiday which brings tons of joy and myriads of happy moments to every city and place. We would like to share with our readers some curious facts about Christmas that make the image of this astonishing holiday even more fantastic and appealing. The history of this holiday goes back to ancient times. Christmas has its roots in pagan festivals that were celebrated around the winter solstice Saturnalia, the Kalends and the “birthday” of Sol Invictus. Many elements associated with Christmas, including Yule log and gift giving, were inherited form these pre-Christian rituals. We celebrate Christmas on December 25th but it was once a movable feast celebrated at different times during the year. There is no clear evidence about the exact date when Jesus Christ was born as the date wasnt mentioned in the Bible. Many theological researchers estimate that Christ was born sometime in September or November between 6BC and 30AD. December 25 was fixed as the official day of Christs birth by Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, in the 4th century A.D. The Christians church selected this date purposely because it coincided with the pagan holidays of the winter solstice and the idea was to replace the pagan celebration with the Christian one. Christmas was the subject of criticism and attacks many times throughout history. The Puritans in America considered Christmas as a decadent Catholic holiday and attempted to make Thanksgiving Day the prime festival instead of Christmas. The Puritans of New England enacted a law that made Christmas illegal in Boston from 1659 to 1681. Those who celebrated Christmas carried a punishment of five shillings for each offense or even were condemned as enemies of the Christian religion. Christmas wasnt an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas as an official holiday in 1836. Oklahoma followed suit only in 1907 and became the last U.S. state to make Christmas a legal holiday. The word Christmas derives from contraction of the Old English name Christes Maesse, which means Christs Mass. The abbreviation of Christmas to Xmas is sometimes thought to be sacrilegious. In fact it is originated from the Greek alphabet where the first letter of Christs name (Chi) is written as X. The legend of Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra, who lived in todays Turkey in the fourth century. Saint Nicholas did many good deeds and he is the most popular non-Biblical saint around the world. Interestingly, the early illustrations of Saint Nicholas portrayed him more like a severe man and a symbol of discipline than the cheerful, massive elf we know today. St. Nikolas is not only the patron saint of kids; he is also the patron of prisoners, thieves, pawnbrokers, bankers, unmarried women, orphans and New York City. Santa has many names in many countries. He is called Father Christmas in England, Saint Nicholas in Europe, Sheng Dan Lao Ren in China, Pere Noel in France, Papa Noel in Brazil and Peru, Joulupukki in Finland, Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) in Russia and El Nino Jesus in Spain. The names of Santa Claus differ because of difference in cultures and traditions across the world but the fact that children are looking forward to his gifts every year is common for all countries in our days. Santa Claus has nine reindeer who lead his sleigh through the sky: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and the red-nosed Rudolph. The Rudolph’s name is taken from the song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, the names of eight other reindeer are from the poem A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore. The tradition of Christmas stockings evolved from a story about three poor sisters who could not afford a marriage dowry. The sisters were saved by Saint Nicholas, who climbed down their chimney and filled their stockings with gold coins. It is considered that the Christmas trees may also date back to pagan traditions. However, the earliest known mentioning of a Christmas tree refers to a German pamphlet from 1570. In England the Christmas trees became popular in the 1800s during the reign of Queen Victoria who brought this custom from Germany. In the United States the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree was adopted by the 1870s. The first known Christmas tree decorations were apples. Medieval actors decorated paradise trees, which were usually the fir trees, with apples during “Paradise Plays”. The idea of decorating the Christmas tree with candles belongs to Martin Luther (1483-1546), who, according to legend, was charmed by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a fir tree. Electric Christmas lights were invented by Thomas Edison’s assistant, Edward Johnson, who got the idea of electric lights for Christmas trees in 1882. In 1895 his idea was accomplished by an American telephonist, Ralph Morris, who designed electric Christmas lights similar to the ones we use today. The first U.S. president who officially placed a Christmas tree in the White House was Franklin Pierce. President Teddy Roosevelt, on the contrary, banned putting up a Christmas tree in the White House during his term for environmental reasons. Today, lighting up a Christmas tree in the White Houses has become a hallowed tradition. We believe that Santa Claus will reserve the best gifts to those boys and girls who are aware of all these fascinating facts about Xmas.
